A newly engineered trail through gold rush country

This ride follows the newly built Kawarau Gorge Trail, connecting the Queenstown Trails network at Gibbston with the Central Otago trails starting at Bannockburn. The route traces the path once used by early settlers during the gold rush era, defying the terrain as it traverses bluffs and crosses above the Kawarau River on clip-on bridges — including two suspension bridge crossings of the river itself.

Through the gorge to Bannockburn

Leaving Gibbston, the trail opens up to rocky outcrops, the Kawarau River and historic gold mining settlements, winding beneath the Nevis Bluff and opening up access to terrain that was previously inaccessible. There's a chance to stop in at the Goldfields Mining Centre along the way to explore the area's gold mining history (entry not included), and if time allows, call into a local winery in Bannockburn.

On to Cromwell via Lake Dunstan

From Bannockburn the route joins the Lake Dunstan Trail, following the Bannockburn Inlet through to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct and finishing at the Kiwi Journeys depot in Cromwell. Riders who want to extend the day further can upgrade to the Tasty Carrick option, adding a wine tasting and pizza lunch at Carrick Cellar Door & Garden.
